Help Malaysian Women Start a Business—and Get a Basket
You have the opportunity — this week — to make a substantial difference in the lives of a group of severely disempowered Malaysian women. You can do this by taking a trip to the new fair trade market and cafe, Pangea (on the corner of 21st and Pennsylvania at I Street), and buying (or showing great interest in) a small, beautifully handcrafted basket, made entirely of recycled materials.
eHomemakers, an Advocacy Project Partner, has just made a huge breakthrough by getting Pangea to take a small "test" batch of their unique eco-baskets. At the beginning of next week, Pangea will gauge the interest in these baskets and will or won’t place a large order accordingly.
eHomemakers is made up of Malaysian women who, due to do discrimination, diability, and other factors, are forced to work out of their homes. Their eco-basket project — called "Salaam Wanita" — is a way for these women to empower themselves by learning a skill and earning a livelihood from home. Eco-baskets are hand-crafted baskets woven from rolled newpapers and magazines.
You are asked to PLEASE take a trip down to Pangea and consider buying even a small basket. If they can demonstrate a real interest in these baskets, and get Pangea to make a longer-term committment (ie, longer than one week), then they are absolutely certain that these baskets will take off, and with them the eHomemakers’ eco-basket project.
